Auto Start for Presentation Options for AVIO

For tradeshows, retail display counters and a host of other applications Casablanca's Presentation Options is a 'must-have' software option. It retails for 69.00 USD and is available on-line from DJROCK.TV.

Presentation Options provides ON/OFF control for these functions:

'Play-Counter' in Preview Mode (normally this is always on, blocking a portion of the lower third of the screen).
'Loop-Mode' which is used to force a scene or an entire project to repeat while in either Preview or Finish mode.
'Play on start-up' which plays the last selected project in Finish mode when AVIO is started.

Unfortunately (up until now) one major shortcoming of this great feature was it could not resume operation after a power interruption or be used with a timer for a controlled start and stop.

The following DJROCK™ upgrade shows you how to modify your AVIO with a switch to give full Auto-Start functionality to your unit. This neat trick allows normal operation or with a flick of a switch it permits your AVIO to start up directly when AC is applied.

Editor's Warning: If you are not certain of how to perform this modification do NOT attempt it. We can do it for you for 50 USD. The software costs 69.00 USD. Shipping is 25 USD to most locations in Canada and the USA. We have posted this information as a courtesy only and will provide no further technical assistance.

 Cover Removal

Place the AVIO upside down on a soft cloth to avoid scratching top.

Remove 4 screws from corners and store them carefully.

Gently lift the bottom and separate it from top cover.

Remove the metal cover plate from the top of the AVIO chassis.

ATX Power Supply Plug

Using a Philips screw driver remove the 3 bolts holding the power supply to the chassis.

Carefully unplug the ATX connector and remove the divider plate and cable feeding the HDD.

With power supply removed isolate the wire feeding Pin 14 which is normally green.

Cut the green wire and trim both ends.

Isolate any black wire (ground) and peel 1/3 of an inch off the jacket around the wire. There is no need to cut this wire.

Examine the photographs to the right.

Prepare Switch

Obtain a SPDT toggle switch (Radio Shack). This switch will have 3 connection points and two positions.

Observe the photographs to the right.

Prepare to drill a hole in the AVIO using an appropriate size metal bit. Make sure it is sharp.

To avoid metal fragments falling into the circuit board area place a dry dish towel over the boards and drill with the open side of the chassis placed downward. Drill from the outside.

Verify the switch fits but do not install it yet.

Carefully remove the towel and any metal shavings when completed.

Solder 3, 6 inch long 22 gage wires to the switch.

The center (common) lead goes to the power supply feed. Either of the other two leads is connected to the main board feed. The remaining wire goes to the black ground lead. Solder and tape these wires individually.

Reconnect the power supply and test with AC plug installed. In one switch position the AVIO will boot up without the front panel switch causing an amber LED. The other will permit normal operation and a green LED.

Install the switch but do not overtighten it. Doing so will break it.

Retest and note the switch position when in Auto-Start mode. Make a label indicating this.

Reassemble your AVIO.

Presentation Options

To have the AVIO automatically start and play in an endless loop, select the desired Project and from the Presentation Options menu select Loop-Mode and Play on Start-up.

When the rear switch is selected to Auto-Start, AVIO will go directly to the chosen Project once the AC is applied. If power is interrupted it will return to play and loop mode once it is restored.

Note 1: To turn off the AVIO while in Auto-Start mode it is best to use the front panel switch first to avoid HDD data corruption. After 5 seconds the rear button can be switched back to normal or the AC removed.

Note 2: While in Auto-Start mode the front panel LED will remain amber.
